In 2012, the island of Hawaii is stepping into the spotlight with not one but two film festivals. Coming up Jan. 4-13, the second annual Waimea Ocean Film Festival offers a celluloid tribute to the sea and the culture that embraces it. Along with a series of ocean-related films, clients can take part in breakfast talks, filmmaker panels, receptions and art exhibits as well as yoga on the beach, outrigger canoe lessons and other activities near and in the Pacific Ocean. Look for it at venues in upcountry Waimea and at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort and Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.
Meanwhile, May 24-28 brings the Big Island Film Festival, taking place at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii and Shops at Mauna Lani. Promising movie magic under the stars for all ages, celebrity social events and professional filmmaking workshops, it has been hailed as one of MovieMaker magazine’s “coolest film festivals.” www.waimeaoceanfilm.org, www.bigislandfilmfestival.com
