African Travel, Inc. is going the extra mile in 2014 to make a trip to Africa something travelers will never forget. The tour operator’s new Distinctive Safari Collection will feature private behind-the-scenes access, exclusive presentations and expert native hosts, including a special departure with African Travel Inc.’s president, Jim Holden.

From May 13-23, 2014, only 16 guests will have the chance to join Holden — a third generation Zambian — on a fully-escorted luxury journey through his homeland. Travelers will enjoy a classic safari experience as they walk with an armed guide out into the bush of the South Luangwa National Park, and follow in the footsteps of missionary explorer Dr. David Livingstone as they boat, walk and take game drives along the Zambezi River. The trip also includes a visit to Tribal Textiles in Mfuwe, and concludes at Victoria Falls. The Spirit of Livingstone with Jim Holden begins at $12,395 per person, land only. An optional four-day pre-tour in Cape Town is also available, from $2,065 per person.

The Distinctive Safari collection also includes the 12-day South Africa Behind the Scenes with Lloyd Camp itinerary, and the 12-day Inspirational Kenya with Lynne Leakey tour. Join native South African cultural and wildlife expert Lloyd Camp on Aug. 4 for a journey to discover the Rainbow Nation’s inspirational leaders such as Nelson Mandela, its wildlife conservation efforts and its multi-faceted culture. Cook Malay cuisine with the Bo-Kaap, photograph the Big Five on a trip to game sanctuaries and delve into South Africa’s history on this tour.

Renowned conservationist Lynne Leakey will lead an inspirational safari, departing Aug. 26, that will delve into Kenya’s wildlife conservation, culture and arts. The tour includes private visits to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the Amboseli Elephant Research Project and Masai Mara Lion Research, plus an insider’s view into the ancient culture of the Maasai with a personal welcome by the chief of the village.

“These African Travel safaris are indeed special, in that what makes the difference between an exceptional safari experience and an okay one is a knowledgeable, well-connected guide,” said Holden. “And that is exactly what these trips have — each unique safari is led by a knowledgeable and well-connected guide to take you behind the scenes and introduce you to people and places you wouldn't normally get to experience. These very special safaris are going to fill rapidly. Sign up now, so you won't be disappointed.”
