TRAVELAGE WEST WINS NATJA AWARDS

LOS ANGELES — Three TravelAge West writers were recognized recently for writing excellence in the 16th annual North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) competition.

Kenneth Shapiro, Editor- in-Chief of TravelAge West, and Ana Figueroa, senior editor, were runner-ups for their story “There’s No Place Like Home,” published in the March 5 issue. The article takes a look at home-based agents and what they mean to the travel industry.Shapiro has previously won awards from NATJA, as well as several other organizations.

Anne Burke, a Los Angeles-based freelance writer who has been a contributor to TravelAge West since 2002, took first place for “The Cutting Edge” in the December 18, 2006, issue. The article examines the growing medical tourism market. It is Burke’s second NATJA award.

The NATJA competition drew entries from virtually every top travel magazine, newspaper, Internet site and publisher. The TravelAge West articles were recognized in the general trade story category.
