Pharoah Sanders

A once-in-a-lifetime experience for jazz fans, the legendary saxophonist and John Coltrane collaborator Pharoah Sanders is performing at the 2010 Portland Jazz Festival on Feb. 28.

Sanders is best remembered in the Pacific Northwest for his 1965 appearance on the album "John Coltrane Featuring Pharoah Sanders - Live In Seattle." Now, he returns not as a sideman, but as a leader. His rhythm section is comprised of Justin Faulkner-drums, Hans Glawischnig-bass and long-time collaborator William Henderson on piano.

Sanders performs on closing day of the Portland Jazz Festival, which is presenting world-class jazz from February 21-28. Throughout the week, there are also number of free jazz events around town including the Ron Steen Jam Session at Produce Row, Belinda Underwood at the Heathman, Anson Wright at the Benson, Devin Phillips at Rogue and Ben Darwish at the Cleaners at the Ace Hotel.

The third component to the festival's citywide commitment to supporting young artists is the PDX Jazz Student Stage, an organization that fosters young musical talent. Dedicated exclusively to showcasing student jazz musicians, the stage features nine large group ensembles.
