The pool deck of Silversea Cruises’ elegant new Silver Spirit was filled with a colorful crowd of agents and press from the Americas mingling with cruise line executives the night before the ship’s inaugural ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The weather, which had been a little iffy, settled into near perfection, and conversations in several languages underlined the international flavor of Silversea. The talk was focused on the new ship's striking spa and fitness area, the gorgeous suites and the Show Lounge, designed to extend the evenings of Silversea guests with classical musicians and production shows.

The following day was equally lovely, perfectly warm, although a strong breeze snapped the Venetian flags on the pier with its art deco decorations in the spirit of the ship. Attendees there for the christening chatted in the sunshine until the priest who was to give the blessing arrived at the pier, having prevailed over Fort Lauderdale traffic. Silversea chairman Manfredi Lefebvre gave a very moving, heartfelt speech about his family and the future of the line before the ship was christened by his sister, Silvia. The ceremony was bookended the music from brass fanfares to opera singers from the Florida Grand Opera's Young Artists Program.

Afterward, a lavish christening lunch was held onboard. During the meal, the press was busy discussing various methods of stowing away as guests for Silver Spirit’s 91-night South America cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to Los Angeles and back to New York!
