The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) presented the new Ulysses Award for Lifetime Achievement to 57-year tourism veteran Gabriel Escarrer Julia, chairman and founder of Melia Hotels International. The judges noted Escarrer’s social responsibility and concern for employee working conditions in addition to his business expertise.
“In 1956, at the age of 21, Gabriel Escarrer established Melia Hotels International, a hotel chain which is today one of the largest in the world,” said UNWTO secretary general, Taleb Rifai. “This award recognizes Mr. Escarrer’s leadership and vision in promoting a responsible Tourism sector.”
In addition, Shao Qiwei, chairman of the China National Tourism Administration, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his roll in making China a world tourism leader.
