In June, Outrigger Resorts celebrated the United Nations’ World Oceans Day event by partnering with the Polynesian Voyaging Society. The Society brought its voyaging canoe, Hokulea, to New York City as part of the vessel’s four-year sail around the world promoting sustainable oceans. Since departing Hawaii in 2014, the canoe has sailed more than 26,000 nautical miles across the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans.
During a ceremony at Long Island’s Gantry Plaza State Park, Nainoa Thompson, Hokulea’s master navigator, presented Ban Ki-moon, secretary general for the U.N., with ocean protection declarations that the boat’s voyagers have collected during their journey.
“Let us renew our resolve to protect these marine treasures for generations to come,” said Ki-moon, who sailed in the canoe in Apia, Samoa, in 2014.
