On July 20, South African Tourism held a “pitch in and clean up ” day in New York’s Central Park to celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day. In partnership with Central Park Conservancy, volunteers — including consul general Thulisile Mathula Nkosi, as well as staff from South African Consulate General, South African Tourism and Permanent Mission of South Africa to the United Nations — donated an hour of their time to clean up the park’s Belvedere Castle and North Meadow Recreation Center.
Nelson Mandela International Day takes place each year on July 18, celebrating the day Mandela was born. In order to honor the late Mandela on his birthday, Nelson Mandela Foundation encourages volunteers to devote 67 minutes of time to helping others.
