Travel Agents and DCI Give Back on World Tourism Day

Oct 07, 2014

In recognition of World Tourism Day on Sept. 27, Development Counsellors International (DCI) and travel agencies from the New York area gathered to volunteer at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City. Altour, Cruise Planners, Midtown Travel and Protravel International were among agencies represented at the event, all supporting this year’s theme of “Tourism and Community Development.”

Volunteer activities included pricing and tagging more than 5,000 items stocked at the museum store. The nonprofit museum does not yet receive any federal, state or city funding for its operations. As result, the organization currently relies on museum store sales, private fundraising, donations and ticket revenue to develop and sustain the museum.

“To celebrate the incredible impact of tourism on community development, we wanted to support a project here in our own community — New York City, where DCI was established back in 1960,” said Naureen Kazi, director of the travel trade division at DCI. “Partnering with our industry colleagues at the September 11 Museum was deeply rewarding and a perfect way to mark the occasion of World Tourism Day 2014.”
