This summer, my family and I decided to take a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. We were particularly looking forward to seeing a new exhibit, “Mexipunx,” by Ruben Ortiz Torres (my father), at the Centro Fotografico Manuel Alvarez Bravo museum.
After arriving, we immediately had to try some of Oaxaca’s world-famous hot chocolate while enjoying the view at Chocolate Mayordomo.
That was one of the only days we had to take it easy, however. The rest of the trip was spent in a flurry of sightseeing and visiting museums.
We hired a driver, who took us around to the local villages for 200 pesos (about $12) per hour. He not only drove us, but he also knew where we should go and provided information about the places we visited, including a natural infinity pool and the Zapotec ruins of Mitla.

If we weren’t driving through textile villages or meeting candle-makers, we were exploring some of the many museums the city has to offer. Oaxaca’s vibrant colors make it a great place for taking photos, too, which drove us to discover new areas every day. Each spot introduced a new part of Oaxaca’s history. In some cases, beautiful old buildings would be next to plazas filled with simple coffee shops and bars.
I would love to go back to Oaxaca and continue to learn more about the city — there is still so much more I want to see. Hopefully one day soon, I’ll return and finish my tour of this amazing place.
