New York's Grande Dame, the landmark 1907 Plaza Hotel, will probably never regain its storied status as the hotel icon of New York City. But the hotel seems okay with that prospect as it chooses to balance boutique-hotel luxury with the respect the address has gained as a residence.

Half the building—the better half facing Central Park—is the domain of privately owned condos, and many of the hotel's guest rooms are part of a time-share operation.
