Kampgrounds of America (KOA) has released its Camper Profile report, providing insights into the evolving landscape of camping.

The report, part of the Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report series, reveals a 68% increase in active camping households over the past decade, driven by the expansion of outdoor hospitality to include diverse accommodations, amenities and experiences.

Findings indicate that many campers begin their outdoor experiences before the age of 18, with 60% starting early and fostering a lasting appreciation for nature. On average, campers take one to two trips per year, spending around 6.7 nights camping annually. The primary motivations for camping include the desire to "slow down and enjoy the moment" (57%) and seeking unique experiences such as witnessing natural events (50%).

The report also highlights trends among new campers, noting that 52% of this group comprises Gen X and Boomers. New campers often start their stays at campgrounds or outdoor resorts with extensive services and amenities, with 48% prioritizing Wi-Fi as a crucial feature.

“By understanding the many different types of campers and their motivations, operators can enhance the outdoor hospitality experience to foster a more inclusive and enjoyable environment,” said Toby O’Rourke, president and CEO of KOA. “The outdoor hospitality industry has grown substantially in the past decade, welcoming experienced and new campers. We are encouraged by the data shown in the report and excited to welcome more people out to connect with nature.”

Additional data shows that camping preferences vary by generation. Younger campers are inclined toward adventure-based activities and novel ways to connect with nature. Millennials focus on quality time with family and friends, often choosing family-friendly parks or glamping resorts. Gen X campers prefer RVs or cabins that balance comfort with exploration of local areas. Boomers and the Silent Generation generally opt for RV camping, valuing the convenience and leisurely pace it provides while exploring national parks and scenic routes.

The 2024 Camper Profiles report is based on 4,100 surveys completed among a random sample of U.S. (2,900) and Canadian (1,200) households.
