On Friday, Feb. 26, Costa Cruises’ Costa Europa hit the pier in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and damaged the right side of the ship.
Costa Crociere chairman and CEO Pier Luigi Foschi said that bad weather conditions and unexpected strong winds caused the accident that killed three crewmen and sent three crewmembers and a passenger to the city hospital. On Friday afternoon, Foschi thanked ship personnel for their “swift reaction and professionalism,” adding that all guests were safe and being hosted in local hotels as Costa arranged their flights back to their destinations.
Europa was on an 18-day regular cruise from Dubai to Savona, with 1,437 guests on board. Other Costa executives indicated that they were frustrated by what they called “misleading” news photos of the ship that showed the empty ship as she was intentionally tilted to patch the hull.
