After multiple trips to Hawaii, my family figured that we knew what to expect on our most recent vacation — despite having never before visited the island of Kauai. But once we began exploring the island, we all came to realize that Kauai had something to suit our various tastes.
For my adventure-seeking dad and teenage brother, a helicopter tour was an absolute must. Kauai boasts miles of isolated coastline, numerous hidden waterfalls and the incredible crater of Mount Waialeale, which all can be seen by air (or in some cases by boat). The tour remained their favorite part of the trip — though a close second for my brother was a hike into Waimea Canyon. With sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, lush green cliffs bordering the coast and stunning canyon landscapes, the trip along the trail proved well worth the effort.
My mother and I preferred to keep our feet on the ground and our toes in the sand. Our favorite spot was Secret Beach, which can only be accessed by a short hike that leads to soft, golden sands and an incredible formation of lava tubes — the perfect pairing of exploration and relaxation. I found this especially fulfilling after a fish taco or two, which we made a point to sample in all their delicious variations around the island.
With secluded wonders and countless ways to see them, Kauai provided the perfect variety for pleasing the entire family.
