Kids can participate in A&K’s Young Explorers program in Antarctica.

Parents will be pleased to know that they can save $1,000 per adult passenger on Abercrombie & Kent’s (A&K) Antarctic itineraries, when booking prior to March 31. However, the kids might even be more enthusiastic about sailing to the South Pole with A&K because of the experiential programs launched just for them.
Introduced on the Minerva ship this winter, the Young Explorers Program teaches kids about marine life, history and geology through hands-on workshops and classes (Nature Interpretation Through Art, Plankton Lab, Squid Biology, for example). The Young Explorers can also take part in a digital photo workshop onboard and in the field where they will create a scrapbook of their voyage.
Adults can hone their photography skills, too, with A&K’s Antarctica, South Georgia, Falklands Islands & the South Atlantic itinerary. During this 21-day departure, an onboard expert in photographing the Antarctic will help travelers capture the bounty the Southern Hemisphere, including Gold Harbour’s colony of king penguins.
The whole family can roll up their sleeves and participate in the Climate Change Challenge onboard Minerva on Dec. 7-20. Dr. James McClintock, who has researched the polar waters for more than 20 years, will lead this eco-expedition, and clients will help measure the impact of global warming on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Because there will never be more than 199 travelers onboard, each A&K Antarctica itinerary has a personalized feel. (On other cruises to different destinations, the Minerva might carry as many as 300 passengers.) With fewer travelers, the company is able to provide more shore and Zodiac excursions each day — and give each guest an outside cabin.
