Spotlight: Maui
Jan. 3-7: Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
The 2013 PGA Tour gets into full swing with this nationally televised golf event. All the champions from last year’s season are eligible to compete, including defending champ Steve Stricker. Visitors can watch some of the world’s best pro golfers while enjoying breathtaking mountain and ocean views at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course. www.pgatour.com/hyundai

Hawaii Island
Jan. 3-11: Waimea Ocean Film Festival.
In addition to screening 30-40 award-winning films, this celebration offers breakfast talks, filmmaker sessions, panel discussions, art exhibits, receptions, yoga on the beach and outrigger canoe lessons. Events take place in Waimea, on the Kohala Coast and at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. Festival passes can be purchased online. www.waimeaoceanfilm.org

Jan. 18-20: Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. Now in its 15th year, this PGA Champions Tour competition features the cream of the crop from the world of golf. Competing for a total purse of nearly $2 million are 40 top players 50 years or older who have won PGA majors or money events. The event takes place at Hualalai Golf Course. www.hualalairesort.com

Jan. 24-26: Hula Workshop and Festival. This three-day event honors Hawaii Island’s cherished cultural historian, legendary hula master and living treasure Iolani Luahine. Clients can enjoy performances, talk story sessions and workshops at Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort. www.iolaniluahine.org

Kauai
Jan. 4: Hanapepe Art Night.
Each Friday evening, the galleries of this big-little burg take turns hosting original performances and demonstrations. Owners light and decorate their shops, imbuing the town with a festive atmosphere. Clients can meet local artists, buy one of their works and enjoy live music. Hanapepe is located on south Kauai’s main road heading west. www.hanapepe.org

Jan. 7: Waimea Historic Walking Tour. This free two-hour journey takes place in one of the most historic towns in Hawaii. Guides discuss how the agricultural landscape changed from taro to rice to corn while sharing fascinating details about the last king of Kauai, the missionaries and other famous citizens of Waimea. Tours depart Mondays at 9:30 a.m. from the West Kauai Visitor Center. www.wkbpa.org

Maui
Jan. 2: Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar.
Every Wednesday evening at the Napili Kai Beach Resort pavilion, entertainer George Kahumoku Jr. hosts a show starring Hawaii performers known for their musical proficiency. This month’s guests include Da Ukulele Boyz, Ledward Kaapana, Keoki Kahumoku, Jeff Peterson, Nathan Aweau and Brother Noland. www.slackkey.com

Jan. 20: Maui Pops. Gary Mauer and Elizabeth Southard join the orchestra for a Broadway tribute at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. The duo presents a collection of memorable songs from hit shows such as “Les Miserables,” “Show Boat,” “West Side Story” and “Chicago.” www.mauiarts.org

Oahu
Jan. 7-13: Sony Open in Hawaii.
Clients can watch 144 top-notch golfers compete on picturesque links during this week-long tournament. Broadcast nationally, the action takes place at Waialae Country Club, whose legendary fairways are flanked by statuesque mountains and dazzling seas. Jan. 27: Pro Bowl. The best players in the National Football League represent their conferences in the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl at Honolulu’s Aloha Stadium.
