SPOTLIGHT: HAWAII ISLAND
4.24-5.3: Kau Coffee Festival. Latte lovers and drip devotees alike rave about this annual event. Activities include the Miss Kau Coffee pageant, a recipe contest, coffee tastings, entertainment, farm tours and demonstrations. A hoolaulea (outdoor party) takes place at Pahala Community Center. Some events are free.
5.21-25: Big Island Film Festival. This celluloid celebration highlights independent movies and the people who make them. Evening films are screened outdoors under the stars, and actor tributes, workshops, concerts and parties round out the schedule. The festival takes place at The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii and The Shops at Mauna Lani.
Kauai 5.4: Waimea Historic Walking Tour. This two-hour tour hosted by West Kauai Visitor Center takes guests back in time. Guides describe how the agricultural landscape changed from taro to rice to corn. Clients learn about Kauai’s last king, missionaries and other famous Waimea citizens.
5.8-10: Celebration of the Arts. Blending culture and the arts in an authentic fashion, this hands-on festival invites clients to interact with island artists, dancers, musicians and cultural experts during workshops, films and concerts. Highlights include a luau and an evening show. The event happens at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
5.2: Waikiki Spam Jam. Waikiki’s Kalakaua Avenue turns into an outdoor party as Hawaii celebrates its love of Spam. Top Oahu restaurants serve Spam-inspired creations; stages provide nonstop entertainment ranging from hula dances to local guitarists; and vendors sell Spam-themed items and Hawaiian crafts.
