Steve Koerselman
Unlike many new employees, Steve Koerselman spent his Labor Day weekend at work.
“We have a hotel to open,” explained Koerselman, a luxury hotel veteran and self-professed “ski bum” who was recently named general manager at the The Sky Lodge in Park City, Utah.
Set to open in December, the all-suite Sky Lodge will offer 33 one-, two- and three-bedroom residences, with rates ranging from $375-$3,750 for the penthouse, as well as vacation-home ownership options.
Koerselman took time out of his busy schedule to give TravelAge West a sneak peek at Park City’s newest luxury resort.
Q: How is The Sky lodge different from other Park City properties?
A: Offering only 33 guestrooms, The Sky Lodge is the only hotel in Park City that is a member of the Small Luxury Hotel brand. Accommodations will feature floor-to-ceiling windows, large balconies with private hot tubs, a contemporary design with top-of-the-line Kohler appliances, wine refrigerators, media rooms with iPod docking stations and flat-screen televisions. Additionally, the hotel is located in the heart of Park City’s Old Town historic district, near several shopping and dining venues, with Park City’s “town lift” only a block away.

Q: What type of clientele are you aiming for?
A: A traveler who expects the best accommodations in a highly personalized environment, with a staff who will remember their name upon walking through the doors. The beauty of managing a small property such as The Sky Lodge is that all employees wear multiple hats and are directly involved in the guest experience.
Q: What can Sky Lodge guests expect when it comes to dining?
A: We will offer three restaurants on site for guests and visitors. Our fine-dining restaurant, Fin, will feature fresh seafood, a raw bar and a sophisticated bar in a small, intimate environment designed to reflect dining at home. The Easy Street Brassiere, featuring a hip, contemporary vibe, will be located on the pedestrian plaza and will offer gourmet burgers and a simple, yet elegant, menu. Lastly, the Easy Street Bakery will feature homemade pastries, a gelateria and drinks from Peet’s Coffee.
Q: What can spa-goers expect at the Amatsu Spa?
A: Our Japanese-themed spa will feature traditional Ofuro baths, steam showers, six treatment rooms and a spa suite and signature treatments, including the ginger-wasabi wrap and the koi-stone massage.
Q: What sort of activities can guests enjoy outside the hotel?
A: Park City is a mecca for the adventurous traveler. During the winter, we offer complimentary transportation to three world-class ski resorts all within a 10-minute drive. As the locals have discovered, “you come to Park City for the winter, but stay for the summer.” Main Street is home to a plethora of festivals and concerts, as well as shopping and dining experiences, all taking place just outside our doors.
Q: Can you explain the property’s commitment to the environment?
A: The Sky Lodge was built on a site comprised of three of the oldest buildings in Park City, all of which were preserved and remodeled to their original state. About half of our dense lot size was conserved for open space, and the new construction was built to exceed the LEED standards [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design], with the use of eco-friendly and recycled building materials.
