Vento |
After six years as Sheraton Kauai Resort’s general manager, Angela Vento has stepped into a new role that brings her to Honolulu. As Starwood’s regional sales and marketing director, she replaces Cheryl Williams, who has moved to the company’s New York corporate offices. TravelAge West caught up with Vento after two weeks on the job to find out about her plans.
What do you see as the biggest challenges in your new job?
The impact of our global economic situation has forced many hotels to implement discounting strategies to encourage leisure, business and group travel. I want to ensure that our portfolio identifies new ways to create customer value, while beginning to grow our rates.
How are you going to try to generate business during this downturn in travel?
Group business is a vital component of recovery. We are defining strategies that support the needs of each island and resort. Industry collaboration is critical for us to achieve significant growth. Starwood is taking a first step toward living
that philosophy as we bring together some of our global customers this June.
You’re known for your commitment to helping women grow and succeed within Starwood. Why is that so important to you?
The support and education that I have been able to experience at Starwood have inspired me to give back. I meet many women who have tremendous talent and simply need more confidence and the opportunity to gain the right experience. Seeing others succeed and be true contributors provides great satisfaction.
What is the best business advice you’ve received to date?
The advice that I have used for many years in many jobs is “go slow to go fast.” Our world is full of immediate expectations. In my new position, it is important that I understand and ask many questions. This advice keeps me from jumping to wrong conclusions and allows me to truly leverage the talents of our team.
