Portland’s most recent libation innovation is vinegar. Drinking vinegar, that is. Called Som, it's made in-house at Andy Ricker’s trio of Thai restaurants in Portland: Pok Pok, Ping and Whiskey Soda Lounge.
Crafted with natural ingredients such as tamarind, passion fruit and lychee, Som is billed as the perfect sweet and tangy pairing for the restaurants’ spicy dishes. Normally served as nonalcoholic drinks with soda water, flavors like pomegranate have also found their way into cocktails at Ping.
The unique beverages have recently been bottled for sale under the Som label, so visitors can bring then home as souvenirs.
