Stargazers heading away from city lights to the clarity and darkness of the higher altitudes will be greeted with specials and packages to make viewing the Perseids Meteor Shower at Mt. Rainier all the more compelling. On Aug. 13, clients can attend a Perseids Meteor Showers dinner at the Summit House Restaurant, Washington’s highest restaurant. At an elevation of 6,872 feet, it's a prime platform for stargazing. Chairlifts begin taking diners on a scenic ride up the mountain at 7:15 p.m. for an 8 p.m. seating. Warm layers and/or blankets are suggested. Cost for the three-course dinner, a star chart and transportation up and down the mountain is $79 per person (360-663-3095).Crystal Mountain Hotels is offering a Perseids Meteor Shower Package which includes two nights lodging for two, a $40 Alpine Inn dinner voucher for Aug. 12, two Summit House dinner vouchers for Aug. 13, a star chart, late night warm beverages and continental breakfast, with rates starting at $320. The package is good for stays on the nights of Aug. 12 and 13 (888-754-6400).
Crystal Mountain Lodging is offering a one-night package including dinner for two at the Summit House Restaurant on Aug. 13. In addition, the package includes lodging in a newly renovated condominium, a light continental breakfast in bed and hotel amenities such as a heated swimming pool. Package cost is $230 for two guests and $350 for four guests sharing the same condominium (888-668-4368).
Meanwhile, Mt. Rainier National Park is presenting a Stargazing at Paradise program on Aug. 14. Ranger Michael Punches starts with a talk in the lobby of the Paradise Inn at 9 p.m., then moves outdoors for guided sky-watching with telescopes, weather permitting. The Tacoma Astronomy Society is providing support for the outdoor portion of the program, which is free to visitors who pay the $15 park entry fee.
