One of the highlights of any visit to Singapore is sampling its food. And no dish represents the city more than chili crab: a whole crab covered in a spicy tomato-based sauce. It’s messy, it’s hot, and it’s delicious.
Visitors can get versions of chili crab at food stalls in most of the hawker markets, but if your clients are looking for a more standard, sit-down restaurant experience — without sacrificing local flavor — recommend Jumbo Seafood.
Jumbo Seafood is an iconic Singapore company that has been around for more than 30 years. It offers a variety of seafood dishes, but nearly everyone orders the chili crab or black pepper crab — sometimes in combination with other seafood dishes and soups.
With locations around Singapore, Jumbo Seafood is convenient to most hotels. I prefer the Riverwalk location because nearby Clarke Quay is a great spot for an after-dinner stroll.
Note: There’s a Jumbo Seafood scheduled to open later this year in Singapore’s Changi Airport, so travelers can try it before heading home.
Chili crab is a signature dish for the city and is a must for every visitor, especially first-timers. And let your clients know: There’s no shame in going back a second — or third — time during their visit.
