Sea Cloud Cruises has officially christened and launched  Sea Cloud Spirit. The new three-masted, full-rigged sailing ship is now ready to take clients on trips after its godmother Gabriela Toran — wife of Inigo Echenique, the ship’s designer — officially named the ship in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, on Sept. 7.

"May you always carry a special spirit across the oceans, as your name promises," she said during the christening ceremony, in which a Champagne bottle was broken over the ship’s bow. In fact, the bottle itself traveled nearly 74.5 miles to arrive as Javier Arias-Camison, legal representative of Sea Cloud, personally brought the bottle after it was blessed in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

The 136-guest Spirit promises to serve as a five-star luxury ship combining traditional seamanship with contemporary amenities. The vessel features balcony accommodations, in addition to wellness and fitness areas.

Spirit’s maiden voyage left from Rome on Sept. 14. Its first cruises will traverse the Italian coastline from Tuscany to Sicily before going to the Canary Islands between November 2021 and April 2022. From there, the ship will head to the Caribbean and Central America for its 2022/2023 winter season, also offering cruises from Florida to the Bahamas.
