Wind Surf Renovation: Full Speed Ahead

Jan 22, 2012

The first phase of Windstar Cruises’ $18 million refurbishment was completed in December, as the 312-passenger Wind Surf, the line’s largest vessel, emerged from its Full Sail Ahead project with upgrades to staterooms, suites, bridge suites and corridors.

The line — originally created by Norwegian investors who wanted to combine cruising under sail with elegance and comfort — moved through a period under the wing of Holland America Line and then to Ambassadors International before being purchased in 2010 by Xanterra Parks & Resorts. The company is investing in the most comprehensive fleetwide refurbishment in Windstar’s history. Renovations will be complete in one phase for Wind Star and Wind Spirit and in two phases for Wind Surf.

Wind Surf launched her Caribbean season in December with new features, including leather headboards, arm chairs, linen wall coverings, window coverings, plush wool carpeting, artwork and stylish bed cushions. Suites were additionally outfitted with new furniture that converts easily to lounging, dining or accommodating a third occupant. Corridors were completely renovated from floor to ceiling with new wall coverings, carpeting, ceiling finishes and lighting.

“The new look enables us to provide an unparalleled guest experience and dramatizes Windstar’s brand position of providing a unique, boutique yacht vacation that is ‘180 Degrees From Ordinary,’” said Hans Birkholz, president and CEO.

The second phase of Wind Surf’s refurbishment will take place this fall and focuses on public spaces, including The Lounge, The Restaurant, Degrees, The Veranda, Compass Rose, WindSpa, Yacht Club and Pool Bar.
