Ponant and Farwind Energy Join Forces for Sustainable Ship Refueling

Ponant recently announced a strategic partnership with Nantes, France-based startup Farwind Energy to pioneer innovative solutions for ship refueling with renewable marine hydrogen.

Together, the two companies will work toward developing the production and utilization of renewable marine hydrogen. The ultimate objective, according to Ponant, is to launch both Ponant’s Swap2Zero (Sustainable, Wind Assisted Propulsion, Zero Emission Ready) project and Farwind’s inaugural energy ship, simultaneously, by 2030. Wind power and low-temperature fuel cells operating on liquid hydrogen are among the technologies under consideration. The project aims to set new standards in energy efficiency and decarbonization within the maritime and cruising industry.

Farwind Energy, headquartered in Nantes and the Caribbean, specializes in cutting-edge solutions for supplying renewable energy. Their energy ship technology aims to generate electricity at sea from offshore wind and convert it into hydrogen through seawater electrolysis. This hydrogen could then be transported onshore for various applications, including fueling ships or powering island territories.

Ponant's Swap2Zero project, slated for completion by 2030, “is the first concept of a transoceanic vessel aiming to approach, as far as state-of-the-art technology will allow, carbon neutrality, whether sailing, maneuvering, in port or at anchor.”

Mathieu Petiteau, Ponant's newbuilding and research and development (R&D) director, emphasized the significance of Farwind Energy's hydrogen production technology, describing it as a game-changer for offering refueling solutions in remote locations, according to a press release from Ponant. He also emphasized the collaboration's potential to revolutionize maritime energy practices, particularly through the Swap2Zero program.

“Farwind Energy’s hydrogen production technology has the advantage of offering hydrogen refueling solutions in places where there are no means of production and supply,” he said. “This collaboration is an opportunity to jointly develop a major project that associates a ship with her own source of renewable energy produced locally. It is an unprecedented revolutionary approach that makes total sense. The Swap2Zero program is the ideal demonstrator to scale up this solution and set new standards. This technological building block will be integrated into our other areas of R&D to support our decarbonization strategy.”

Arnaud Poitou, Chairman of Farwind Energy, expressed pride in partnering with Ponant, citing the company's commitment to sustainable navigation. He highlighted the promise of Farwind's liquid hydrogen technology in decarbonizing maritime transport, especially in regions lacking conventional energy infrastructure.

“We are proud to share our roadmap with Ponant, an innovative company committed to low carbon navigation,” he said. “This collaboration opens up new perspectives for our highly innovative renewable energy production technology. Capable of being produced near the ship’s operating areas, our liquid hydrogen represents a promising solution to decarbonize maritime transport,” explains Arnaud Poitou, Chairman of Farwind Energy.”
