The best family vacations with babies, toddlers, preschoolers and elementary-school-age kids have one thing in common — they’re easy.
Carlsbad, California, in North County San Diego, delivers that in droves. With 7 miles of coastline, lagoons, golf courses and a selection of resorts, the town naturally woos adults, while theme parks, kid-friendly hotels and plenty of outdoor space win over kids.
Here’s why the sunny, lush enclave might just be one of Southern California’s most underrated destinations for families.
Where to Eat
Carlsbad’s two Michelin-starred restaurants (Jeune et Jolie and Lilo) may be better picks for kid-free date nights, but there’s plenty to love at the new family-friendly Verise, the Central Italian restaurant at the new Hotel Solea. Concepted by chef Riccardo Billotta (who earned his stripes in Michelin kitchens in Europe and New York), it features handcrafted pastas and wood-fired pizzas that are deceptively simple, but meticulously prepared, juxtaposing the intricate design of the indoor area.
The grand entrance features a custom-made chandelier of woven cane drum pendants that hangs over moss-green velvet banquettes, cane chairs and marble tables for a curated, eclectic feel. Outside, the seating overlooks the family pool and the small olive grove used for events, which doubles as an area for kids to play in between courses. Waits can be long, so come expecting a leisurely meal.

Formerly a Sheraton, Hotel Solea spent millions making over the property as a 201-room Marriott Bonvoy Autograph Collection resort with warm, on-trend decor (lots of wood, geometric-shaped textiles and open shelving featuring ceramics) plus the essentials — tasty dining, a busy pool scene and access to a private entrance to Legoland, which is a 10-minute walk away.
While rooms may be on the smaller side, they pack a lot of what families need, offering a value stay full of little luxuries that is neither too upscale and adult-focused nor overstimulating and juvenile. Our vibrantly decorated suite was able to squeeze in a king-bed area and a small living room connected via a hallway to a second bedroom (closed off by its own door) with two twin beds.

Where to Play
Legoland California Resort is always fun, and now guests have a whole new land to explore: Lego Galaxy. The Galacticoaster indoor coaster — the park’s first new rollercoaster in two decades — is the marquee attraction of the space-themed land, which is rounded out with more rides, new characters and a Lego rocket-building zone. Guests visiting through July 19 can also check out the FIFA World Cup 2026 Experience, where they can meet Lego versions of soccer stars, design a jersey in Lego bricks and more. And when temperatures get high, the resort also offers an aquarium and a waterpark.

If planning to visit in spring, families will want to extend their trips to include the Carlsbad Flower Fields, which are so much more than the name suggests. Kids will love taking a tractor ride around the 55 acres of flowers — including the world’s largest ranunculus field — before completing a scavenger hunt that takes them through blooms, a playground and the opportunity to pan for gems. And don’t skip out on the butterfly exhibit, where kids will never forget seeing hundreds of butterflies fluttering around — and landing on — them.
