Adventurous travelers are always looking for the next thrill. Several years ago it was ziplining. Then everybody seemed to be trying stand-up paddleboarding. The next must-do activity for thrill seekers could well be flyboarding, a sport that captured public attention when celebrated actor Leonardo DiCaprio soared above the water on a flyboard off his yacht in the Mediterranean.

The all-inclusive all-suites Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit is giving guests an opportunity to experience flyboarding through a Flyboard Experience package. Offered through operator Vallarta Adventures, the package is available at reduced rates through April 26.

“We always strive to be cutting edge, to be the first out there with new activities, experiences and facilities,” said Juan Vela, vice president of Velas Resorts. The resort company researched what was trending in consumer interest for water sports and discovered flyboarding, Vela reported.

“Traveler reaction has been wonderful,” Vela said. “We’re even getting repeats, which is the ultimate praise.”

What It’s All About

Flyboarding bears some similarity to taking off above the waves with a jet pack, although a flyboard is more like a supercharged wakeboard that propels the rider over the water and up in the air.

The rider stands on a board connected to a long hose that’s attached to a boat. Pressurized water flows through the hose to the rider’s boots, providing thrust that can lift the rider up to 50 feet in the air. Nozzles under the rider’s feet provide most of the propulsion and handheld nozzles help riders keep their balance, much like ski poles help a skier maneuver. The flyboard is buoyant and riders who tire during the experience can land on the water and catch a breather between rides.

The Flyboard Experience package offered by Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit includes one flyboard tour per adult per stay and transportation to and from the tour at 20 percent off the regular rate for adults and 50 percent off the rate for children ages five to 16. Package rates start at $339 per adult, per night, based on double occupancy and a three-night minimum stay.

After April 26, travelers visiting the Riviera Nayarit region can experience flyboarding by booking a tour through Vallarta Adventures.
