Several new properties have opened in New Orleans this past year, and one especially unique option is Henry Howard Hotel, which situates itself between a full-service property and a bed-and-breakfast.
The boutique hotel, located in the city’s Garden District, evokes a feeling of mixed generations — modern artwork and furnishings are set within a restored, double-gallery, 1860s townhouse-style mansion. The Greek Revival building, featuring dramatic Corinthian columns, was built by New Orleans architect Henry Howard, the hotel’s namesake.
The Parlor, a bright lobby, also serves as the breakfast room, with a concierge counter that doubles as a bar. The space features 12-foot ceilings, crown molding and large windows. The first floor and backyard courtyard are available for small parties and special events.
Both the common areas and the 18 guestrooms mix history with modernity, as well. Works by New Orleans artist Hayley Gaberlavage dot the walls, some dressed in toile wallpaper containing New Orleans icons. Instruments used by New Orleans brass bands — trumpets, saxophones and trombones — are situated everywhere, serving as decorative elements that remind visitors that New Orleans is both a city of established wealth and a progressive, evolving culture.
Each guestroom includes complimentary Wi-Fi access, premium television channels, Beekman 1802 toiletries and a collection of local products in the minibar, such as Barq’s root beer, Swamp Pop soda, voodoo dolls and Southern Rhoades bug spray.
Henry Howard is conveniently located one block from the St. Charles streetcar line, so visitors may park their cars and leave the driving to others.
