Los Cabos' Growing Hotel Scene

Los Cabos has shown unwavering resilience in the months following Hurricane Odile, which made landfall and ravaged the area in September 2014. A few properties remained closed for months for extensive renovations and repairs after the storm hit, but most of the damaged hotels have since reopened, and occupancy is high.

Los Cabos once again boasts approximately 14,000 operating hotel rooms, a number that is continuing to climb, with plans for nearly 4,000 additional rooms in 13 new hotels by the end of 2017.

For clients looking to plan a vacation in Los Cabos, there are properties for nearly every budget and style.

Pop-culture enthusiasts might want to try One&Only Palmilla, a celebrity magnet that began welcoming guests back in April, when it reopened with a new spa and fitness center, renovated rooms and Seared, a Michelin-starred steakhouse from chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

Hip travelers looking for an upscale option will be pleased with the aesthetics of The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, which began accepting guests in July.

All rooms at the chic, retro-modern resort face the Sea of Cortez and the famous rock arch at Land’s End. Downtown Cabo San Lucas and its legendary nightlife scene is nearby, though the resort has plenty of amusements in-house, according to Eduardo Segura, the property’s general manager.

“From the architecture of our building and its interior design to the nightlife offerings on our rooftop lounge, we’re bringing something truly distinct to Cabo,” said Segura, the former director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board.

In addition to The Cape, Los Cabos has plans to open several new hotels in the coming months. Stylish sophisticates are sure to be drawn to Mar Adentro Los Cabos, set to open in November. Along with private residences, the resort will include a 160-room hotel designed by architect Miguel Angel Aragones, the creator of the stunning Encanto Acapulco.

Though there is a definite focus toward high-end development in Los Cabos, travelers with more modest budgets also have options, including the new Hampton Inn & Suites and City Express Suites Cabo San Lucas.

Final touches are underway at the new 299-room JW Marriott Los Cabos, a good option for clients who prefer the comfort of a familiar brand. The property is scheduled to open in November among the desert dunes overlooking the Sea of Cortez at Puerto Los Cabos. All the luxuries one expects with Marriott’s signature service are available, along with an added focus on the history and culture of Baja California Sur and Mexico. Suite names are inspired by the indigenous Cochimi language, and the full-scale spa includes a temazcal sweat lodge, once used by ancient Aztecs to promote healing and overall health. Puerto Vallarta chef Thierry Blouet oversees restaurant Cafe des Artistes, and P’yote Rooftop Bar features some of Oaxaca’s finest mezcals. Casa del Mar Golf Resort & Spa will reopen in October.

Other openings scheduled for 2016 include Vievage Los Cabos, an Auberge resort, and Park Hyatt. New all-inclusive options include AMResorts’ Breathless Cabo San Lucas, and Le Blanc Los Cabos. The pace continues in 2017 with Hard rock Hotel Los Cabos; Montage Los Cabos; Los Cabos, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve; Nobu; and Solaz, a branch of Starwood’s luxury collection, among others. Several residential projects and golf courses are also underway.
