When Bigger Is Better: Mexico’s Largest Hotels Know How to Wow

There are times when travelers prefer hotels that are small and intimate, of course. But sometimes, there’s simply nothing better than a large-scale property loaded with features and amenities.

Mexico is home to an array of hotels that wow guests with oversize offerings. Here are some of the largest and tallest properties around the country.

The Largest Hotels in Mexico by Room Count

It’s no surprise that Mexico’s Caribbean and Pacific coasts are home to the nation’s most expansive properties, which are designed to please diverse traveler types. These are some of the largest, by room count.

Barcelo Maya Grand Resort

With more than 2,700 rooms spread among multiple hotels, this complex has eight swimming pools, a children’s waterpark, 16 restaurants and a spa and wellness center that measures some 43,000 square feet. Individual hotels include the Barcelo Maya Palace, Barcelo Maya Riviera, Barcelo Maya Caribe, Barcelo Maya Colonial, Barcelo Maya Tropical and Barcelo Maya Beach. 

Vidanta Nuevo Nayarit-Vallarta

This growing complex, located north of Puerto Vallarta, has 2,465 rooms and is home to hotels including Grand Luxxe, The Grand Mayan, Celebrate Park, The Estates and Mayan Palace. Guests have access to a spa, two golf courses, multiple entertainment venues, an aerial gondola ride and theme park VidantaWorld Nuevo Vallarta. 

Moon Palace Cancun

With more than 2,000 rooms spread out across some 123 acres, Moon Palace Cancun has 19 pools, a waterpark with a Flowrider Double surf simulator, a 76,875-square-foot spa and 17 food venues and 11 bars, as well as a 27-hole golf course and courts for tennis, basketball and pickleball. Families can make use of a children’s club furnished with a mini-movie theater, skating rink, maze and video gaming area. 

Ava Resort Cancun

Just opened this summer, the 1,622-room Ava Resort Cancun has six swimming pools, a 2.8-acre lagoon, 17 eateries and bars, a spa that measures more than 66,000 square feet and a nightclub. The property hosts live special events under its Vive Ava banner; the most recent was an appearance by Joe Jonas during a multiday Dia de los Muertos celebration. 

Iberostar Waves Paraiso Beach
Iberostar Waves Paraiso Beach is also part of the Iberostar Selection Paraiso complex, which has an 18-hole golf course, a shopping complex, a spa and more.

Iberostar Playa Paraiso

The Iberostar Playa Paraiso complex in Riviera Maya is home to 1,956 guestrooms across multiple hotels: Joia Paraiso by Iberostar, Iberostar Selection Paraiso Maya Suites, Iberostar Selection Paraiso Lindo, Iberostar Waves Paraiso Beach and Iberostar Waves Paraiso del Mar. The complex features a convention center, fitness center, spa, 18-hole golf course and shopping center. 

Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya

 This 1,264-room property recently remodeled its adults-only section, Heaven, and added two new restaurants, a swimming pool and a bar. Also renovated is Vibe City, the club for kids and teens. The property also has six pools and a waterpark. 

Grand Oasis Cancun 

This 1,230-room room resort features a 1,311-foot swimming pool, children’s club, spa, nightclub, casino and the 19,000-square-foot Oasis Arena, which hosts live music and sporting events.

Hotel Riu Santa Fe

Located on Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas, the 1,416-room Hotel Riu Santa Fe offers multiple pools and restaurants, a waterpark, a spa and a kids club. The hotel hosts weekly, adults-only themed Riu Parties.

The Tallest Hotels in Mexico

Travelers who enjoy a spectacular bird’s-eye view will do well at Mexico’s tallest hotels, which are located in the nation’s three largest cities. Expect helipads, sky suites, rooftops bars and more.

The Ritz-Carlton, Mexico City

Set in a 58-story tower, this 153-room, helipad-equipped hotel has guestrooms perched as high as the 47th floor. The views of Chapultepec Park are stunning from the restaurant and bar.

Hotel Safi Royal Luxury Metropolitan

Located in Monterrey, this 360-room luxury hotel is set in a 56-story tower and has five Sky Suites perched at an altitude of 721 feet, offering 180-degree views.

Hotel Riu Plaza Guadalajara

 Set in a 42-story tower (the tallest building in Guadalajara), this 556-room hotel has a swimming pool, spa, rooftop bar and 16 meeting rooms. 

Sofitel Mexico City Reforma

This 275-room property is set in a 42-story tower that rises above the Paseo de la Reforma boulevard. The 38th-floor Cityzen Rooftop Bar is a big draw for travelers and locals alike, and the hotel also offers an indoor pool, spa and five bars and restaurants. 

Hyatt Regency Andares Guadalajara

Located in a 41-story tower in Guadalajara’s upscale Andares area, this 257-room property has multiple restaurants, an indoor pool and a spa and fitness center.

Hyatt Regency Mexico City

This 755-room hotel, located in Mexico City’s upscale Polanco district, is set in a 38-story tower and is furnished with a helipad, wellness center and three restaurants. The property recently debuted new pickleball courts next to the existing tennis courts and swimming pool.

The 31-story St. Regis Mexico City offers 189 rooms, six dining venues, an indoor pool and a helipad.

The St. Regis Mexico City

Set in a 31-story tower on Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma, this 189-room luxury hotel features six dining venues, a spa with an indoor swimming pool and a helipad. New garden suites each offer an outdoor terrace, a jacuzzi and a fireplace.

Hilton Mexico City Reforma

This 459-room hotel in downtown Mexico City is set in a 27-story building that offers some of the best views of Alameda Central Park; its unique, altitude-oriented activities for guests include a cycling class that takes place atop the hotel’s helipad.

Set in a 26-story tower in Mexico City’s Polanco district, this 314-room property recently completed a renovation and features a helipad and a rooftop pool with views of Chapultepec Park.
