A Sneak Peek at the Upcoming Sandbourne Santa Monica Hotel

A Sneak Peek at the Upcoming Sandbourne Santa Monica Hotel

While soaking in the Southern California sunshine on a late November day, enjoying the gorgeous views of Santa Monica’s pier and beach from a hotel suite’s sprawling patio, I was reminded why this neighborhood is one of Los Angeles’ most popular tourism spots.

And soon, clients will have a new way to enjoy the all-season sunshine and laidback vibes of the area, when the new Sandbourne Santa Monica debuts this spring. The new hotel concept is a transformation of Le Merigot Santa Monica, giving the property a physical upgrade, as well as a whole new sense of self.

On a recent visit to preview the redesign, I was impressed by many of the structure’s existing attributes, including a prime location just steps from the beach, Third Street Promenade and the iconic Santa Monica Pier; oversize guestrooms that start at approximately 450 square feet; and suites with expansive patio spaces overlooking the sea and sand (plus, some pretty spectacular sunsets).

The lobby will feature a color palette inspired by the sea and sand, plus an abundance of plants.

Building off the existing property’s solid foundation, the Sandbourne team is set to introduce its totally new luxury concept, and is currently transforming many of the hotel’s physical spaces. The renovation project spans the hotel’s 175 guestrooms and suites, new restaurant and lobby bar concepts, a full-service spa and an indoor/outdoor fitness center, event spaces and the pool.

Designer Gulla Jonsdottir has been tapped to bring the design-forward property to life, featuring a color palette that reflects the sea and sand, contemporary art, minimalist accents, abundant greenery, woven fibers, soft linens and other details meant to embody the hotel’s location.

And in fact, Santa Monica is inspiring more than just design elements. The team shared with me their dual goals of offering travelers a taste of L.A. life, as well as serving as a gathering spot for locals — in essence, becoming a valued part of both the tourism scene and the Santa Monica community.

To that end, Sandbourne has brought in chef Raphael Lunetta, a Santa Monica native and beloved food scene staple, to curate its new restaurant concept. Showcasing Lunetta’s signature coastal California cuisine, the full-service restaurant will feature both a dining room and a lush outdoor patio when it opens.

Other planned touches for the property include an on-site dog park, a honeybee hive and a revamped pool deck with cabanas and ocean views. A full-service spa will open later, in 2025.
