A Prestigious Partnership

Aug 28, 2008

The Mexico Tourism Board and National Geographic Traveler magazine have partnered to create an extensive Mexico-inspired concert series to be held across North America — including an event at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl — in the month of September.

The joint venture will promote tourism to Mexico by booking artists that are either from Mexico or were inspired by the country in a major way. In addition to musical acts like Kinky, Los Lobos, Calexico, Lila Downs and Ozomatli, the concert series will include a vibrant village that showcases the arts and crafts of Oxaca artisans and other well-known Mexican artists; off-the-beaten path hotels and destinations; and authentic Mexican cuisine from various regions. Guests who wander through the village may walk away with free souvenirs including National Geographic maps, reusable tote bags and samples of Mexico’s organic, shade grown, Free Trade Certified coffee.

The Sept. 21 event will be held in Southern California at the Hollywood Bowl, as part of the popular Los Angles radio station, KCRW’s, world music series. Lila Downs, Ozomatli, Spearhead with Michael Franti and Nortec Collective (who will be backed by a live Mariachi band) are scheduled to perform for what is expected to be a packed house, according to the event’s promoter.

“We are honored to collaborate with a publication as prestigious as National Geographic Traveler and showcase Mexico at prestigious venues like the Hollywood Bowl, Central Park and The Kennedy Center,” said Jorge Gamboa Patron, Los Angeles director, Mexico Tourism Board. “It is our best promotion yet.”
