Forking Over Maya Culture

Mar 01, 2013

Maya culture was in the spotlight throughout much of 2012. This was primarily a result of the hubbub over the end of the Maya calendar. While that excitement has died down, there is a residual effect of a greater appreciation of Maya culture in all its forms, including its cuisine, which up until now has been overshadowed by the worldwide appeal of the classic cuisine of Mexico.

Maroma Resort and Spa by Orient Express in the Riviera Maya has made it easy for its guests to have a high-end Maya dining experience. The resort has launched a new dining concept with its venue Aldea Maya, which is designed to immerse guests in the experience of Maya culture.

Aldea Maya, which translates to "Mayan Village," sits beachside in Riviera Maya. The themed menu highlights the region's signature flavors and is inspired by the four basic elements thought by the Mayans to be the building blocks of the universe: fire, earth, water and air. Using only locally sourced ingredients, dishes such as black bean stew with sour cactus fruit salsa and the lion fish cooked with a banana leaf and a mint, tomatillo and local citrus salsa are prepared over an open flame using clay pots and pans.

Guests at the resort have additional dining options that include traditional regional cuisine at the on-site El Restaurante and El Sol. They can also enjoy an extensive wine selection at the Maroma Wine Cellar, or a selection of tequilas and home brewed beers at the resort’s La Cantina.

Maroma Resort and Spa by Orient Express positions itself as a high-end property with a light footprint, made up of low-rise buildings surrounded by the beach and Yucatan jungle. Accommodations include suites and a private villa opening on to the beach. Guests can further their investigation of Maya culture by exploring nearby Maya heritage sites, or schedule a treatment in the Maya-style Kinan Spa, which features a temazcal sauna, similar to the American Indian sweat lodge. The temazcal experience is designed to create a feeling of both physical and spiritual wellbeing. Maroma Resort and Spa by Orient Express also offers yoga classes conducted on a rooftop with 360-degree views of the ocean and jungle.
