Funjet Backs Groove Fest

Jul 06, 2004
Funjet Vacations is the exclusive vacation sponsor for the Jubilee Groove Fest in Cancun, a four-day event scheduled for Oct. 7-10 at the all-inclusive Moon Palace.

Dubbed “the party with a conscience,” this is the first year for the Jubilee Groove Fest, which promoters hope will become an annual event. Created by Texas-based marketing group The Q Network, the fest aims to attract travelers who love a beach party, but have grown out of events targeting teens and twentysomethings.

“This event was created because a lot of beach events are skewed to a younger, what I call ‘girls gone wild,’ audience or they’re for people who are over 40,” said organizer Dominique Lashae. “This is for people somewhere in between.”

Funjet describes Jubilee Groove Fest as an event that would appeal to African-American Christians, but Lashae said it isn’t a specifically Christian event. The program includes a praise breakfast led by Rev. R. Lockett Jr. and a beachside worship service and concert on Sunday led by Rev. Frederick D. Hayness III, for example. But Lashae said the entertainment will have broader appeal.

The event kicks off with a live broadcast of the Doug Banks radio program at the Moon Palace from 5 to 10 a.m. Highlights of the weekend include a comedy show featuring Rickey Smiley followed by an after-party on the beach with Biz Markie; a luncheon featuring Sistah Souljah; a poetry jam featuring the original poets from Def Comedy Jam; a Steve Harvey fashion show; and a Brian McKnight concert.

The Q Network has been promoting the event across the country, and Lashae said they expect to book 2,500 to 5,000 for the event, which is being held mainly at the Moon Palace, with a few activities elsewhere around Cancun.

Three-, four- and seven-night air-inclusive vacations are available with departures from various cities across the country. The packages include accommodations, airport transfers, event tickets, 24-hour traveler’s assistance and the services of a Funjet representative in Cancun.

Land-only prices, based on an Oct. 8 arrival, start at $705 at Moon Palace (including all meals, beverages and more); $550 at the Oasis Cancun; $590 at the Oasis Playa; $620 at the Riu Grand Caribe; $625 at the Beach or Cancun Palace; $650 at the Riu Cancun; and $750 at the Riu Palace Las Americas.
