Surf culture and Los Cabos are a perfect match. Not only are there great surf breaks, there's also an over-the-top nightlife scene that supplies an adrenaline rush after the sun goes down. The surfers I know are almost always aficionados of off-road driving and the desert tracks surrounding Los Cabos make for a gnarly ride. During my visit, a high point was driving a Hummer over twisting trails.
Los Cabos is going to attract a lot of attention from the worldwide surf community when it hosts "The Los Cabos Open of Surf." The surf and music festival will be held June 17-23 at Costa Azul's Zippers beach break, a strong right break that produces eight- to 10- foot waves. The event will also serve as the site of a World Qualifying Series, which gives surfers a chance to rack up points to win a ticket to the World Championship Tour and to compete for a $155,000 purse.
The Los Cabos Open of Surf will also feature beach concerts with international artists and DJs, a food fair showcasing local cuisine and fashion shows presenting surf's top brands. My advice is to book early if you're looking for a room in one of the more affordable hotels, such as the Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas. I have a feeling they will sell out fast.
