In the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma, a survey of the Yucatan
area’s Mexico Boutique Hotels focuses on positive energy to the
region. The group’s four properties offer an update on their
operational status.
Casa de los Suenos, Isla Mujeres
While Wilma visited its neighboring shores, Isla Mujeres sustained
little serious damage. This less-than-five-mile island is some 20
minutes from Cancun by boat.
Casa de los Suenos manager, Eric Jafet, said, “We repaired the boat
dock and took advantage of the time to do some other repairs and
actually improved some details to the rooms. We retain the same
staff of employees that we’ve had for years, so the service
continues at the ultimate level of luxury.”
Secreto, Isla Mujeres
Since the nine-room hotel was closed for renovations during the
hurricane, there was little damage aside from broken glass. In the
completed renovations, each room was extended to create a junior
suite with three additional rooms (ready in spring 2006). A spa,
gym and 20-meter pool provide further services. Based on designs
from the Far East, the pool features a four-sided Infinity edge
that floats above the deck.
Xaloc, Isla Mujeres
Owner/Manager Juan Felix Sanchez remarked, “The Hotel Xaloc on Isla
Holbox only suffered minor damage because its owner is an architect
and the hotel was constructed very well. Please be advised that the
hotel does have a beach, but due to an elevation in the ocean it is
slightly smaller than before. It is still in great condition and
enjoyable.”
Ana Y Jose, Tulum
Located some 120 km from Cancun, Tulum sustained no damage from
Hurricane Wilma. In fact, it received some of the displaced sand
resulting in an even better beach. An outside restaurant, temazcal
hut, spa, pool area and palapa-protected chaise lounges on the
beach offer a variety of locations for experiencing paradise.
Puerto Vallarta-based Mexico Boutique Hotels is the only company of
its kind exclusively dedicated to offering boutique-category
lodging in Mexico under a qualification system. Its 38 intimate
hotels are situated in over 20 Mexican destinations.
