Air Jamaica recently announced that it will cease operations of its passenger routes to/from Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta and Grand Cayman, as well as discontinue service to/from Barbados and Grenada beginning Feb. 26. Along with downsizing its work force and routes, the airline is also minimizing its fleet to a total of nine aircraft in an effort to improve its aircraft utilization by 25 percent. Air Jamaica’s new schedule will have a total of 218 weekly flights to 13 different destinations, including service out of New York, Chicago and Orlando.
"These decisions were not arrived at easily, and they reflect a commitment to the people of Jamaica that we will do everything to reduce the airline’s impact on the national budget — something that is certainly even more important now as the country navigates through the global financial crisis," said Bruce R. Nobles, Air Jamaica president and CEO.
Air Jamaica’s board of directors, the Jamaica minister of finance and the cabinet approved the new business plan. The Government of Jamaica is currently in the process of privatizing Air Jamaica to meet a March deadline. As of press time, the airline confirmed that it is in talks with three prospective investors within the airline industry.
