The newest American Express Spending & Saving Tracker shows that 51 percent of Americans are planning a summer vacation this year and 67 percent are planning to spend the same amount of money or more than they did last year. On average, most respondents said they plan to spend $1,000 per person on summer travel. While the majority of those surveyed said they would travel domestically (89 percent), those planning to travel abroad are choosing classic European destinations such as London, Rome, Paris and Athens. Family trips were the most popular (52 percent) followed by couples trips (26 percent) and staycations (11 percent). Survey respondents were composed of a research sample of 2,000 adults from the general U.S. population, including two subgroups — the affluent and young professionals — interviewed from April 16 to 21.
