Qantas Airways welcomed its first A380 flight from Melbourne, Australia, at LAX Oct. 20. The flight was the first commercial A380 flight to serve Los Angeles, and a star-studded inaugural at LAX’s Flight Path Learning Center was marked by speeches from John Travolta, a Qantas Airways global goodwill ambassador, and Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, as well as Geoff Dixon, CEO of Qantas Airways. Other inaugural participants were incoming Qantas CEO Alan Joyce and Olivia Newton-John, among others.

The celebration also included a flight in the A380, on which members of the media flew over San Francisco for views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz from the world’s largest airliner.

LAX welcomed Qantas’ Sydney to Los Angeles A380 service on Oct. 24.
