Travel Gear for Every Trip

Oct 17, 2005

We’ve found two products that you can take along on every trip, but we hope you never need them: a tiny but powerful emergency whistle and a battery-free mobile-phone charger. Plus, a travel pillow with its own stuff sack.

Charge It
Sidewinder Charger

This hand-crank phone charger requires a little elbow grease but will save the day if your mobile phone runs out of juice and you cannot get to a conventional charging outlet. Two minutes of charging equals more than 6 minutes of talk time. Fits in a pocket or purse. $19.95. (Carrying case, $3.49.)

What a Scream
JetScream Whistle

This sleek personal alarm delivers a piercing shriek that can out-scream your own voice should you need to signal for help. Attaches
to a key chain, purse, backpack or zipper. $6.95.

Sweet Dreams
Cocoon Travel Pillow

If you can find them at all, airline pillows don’t provide much cushion. This synthetic-down travel pillow is fat yet squishes into a small stuff sack. Small, $16; medium, $18. (Flannel pillow case, $8.)
