AmaWaterways has announced that it is currently constructing the largest river vessel in Europe. AmaMagna, which will debut on the Danube River in 2019, is even larger than Crystal Mozart, measuring the same width and 135 meters in length rather than 120.
Rudi Schreiner, president and co-owner of AmaWaterways, says he has been considering the concept of such a ship for five or six years, and the company now has enough capacity to dedicate a ship entirely to the Danube River. The river features wide-enough locks between Passau, Germany, and Budapest for a ship of this size.
Schreiner notes that AmaMagna will differ from Mozart in many respects: Mozart has two hallways with crew accommodations in between, whereas Magna will have one hallway, and the bulk of its accommodations will be 318 square feet.
“Magna’s design is more like an ocean ship,” he said. “We have doubled the space and will carry only four more passengers than a Viking ship. We will have the main restaurant; the Chef’s Table; alfresco, glass-enclosed dining; and potentially two additional restaurants. We’re balancing space between meeting rooms and dining venues.”
The ship will have a number of new features, including a quieter and more fuel-efficient engine than that of previous river vessels and an aft open-water sports platform, complete with zodiac boats, canoes and recreational equipment.
“We’re still working out exactly what equipment to put in,” Schreiner said. “The platform is like a garage that comes down and will have things such as kayaks, canoes and Jet Skis, but we want to be careful. The Danube can have strong currents, and we want to be sure guests will be safe and comfortable.”
Ama is planning a Sky Lift, an elevator that will bring guests up to the top deck, complete with a large heated swimming pool with a separate hot tub and a Sky Bar.
The spa on Magna will be large enough to offer new treatments, and the fitness room will be able to accommodate small group classes.
