In a sign that European river cruise travel is rebounding following the COVID-19 pandemic, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises this week christened its newest S.S. Sao Gabriel ship on the Douro River in Portugal. The new super ship was officially named by godmother Joke De Bruyn, the line’s director of hotel operations.
“It was a delight to toast with our beloved loyal guests and crew and celebrate being back on the rivers onboard our beautiful, brand-new super ship,” said Ellen Bettridge, CEO and president of Uniworld, in a press release. “This is only the beginning for us. It’s been a journey, but after recently setting sail in Italy, and now Portugal, we’re looking forward to continuing this momentum with the restart of our itineraries in France and Central Europe next month.”
Sao Gabriel is designed specifically for and inspired by the UNESCO-designated Douro River Valley region which is reflected through decor, cuisine and wine. Amenities extend to top-deck suites, which are complete with butler service, and allow clients to dine at any hour while onboard.
The riverboat’s first itinerary is Uniworld’s 11-day "Portugal, Spain & The Douro River Valley" itinerary, which travels from Porto to Lisbon.
