Viking guests have previously been able to visit Vietnam and Cambodia but only onboard the relatively generic Viking Mekong. Now the line is introducing the new Viking Saigon, a locally inspired but more Scandinavian-designed riverboat in keeping with the rest of the mainly contemporary fleet. The vessel will launch along the Mekong River on Aug. 30, 2021.
“For many of our guests, Vietnam and Cambodia remain top destinations because of their significance in world history,” said Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking, in a press release. “We have led the river cruise industry with our fleet development and experiences that bring travelers closer to the cultures of the world for more than two decades. This will be the most modern vessel on the Mekong and will feel like home to our loyal Viking guests who are familiar with the comfortable design of our ships.”
Already under construction, the Saigon will carry up to 80 guests in 40 outside staterooms on Viking’s “Magnificent Mekong” itinerary. Cabins will feature hotel-style beds and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors with either a French balcony or veranda. Categories will further mimic the line’s signature Longships, including 735-square-foot Explorer Suites.
Additional amenities include a fine dining room, a large interior lounge and bar, a cozy library, a retail shop, a spa and fitness center and an infinity pool and al fresco sky bar on the upper deck — the latter two of which are not present onboard the older Mekong vessel. The Saigon’s exterior will be architecturally reminiscent of its predecessor save for a fresh white paint scheme, but on the inside, the new ship will showcase a beautiful blend of modern and traditional decor.
The 15-day route encompasses a total of 16 guided tours; hotel stays in Hanoi, Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City and an eight-day Mekong River cruise on the new ship. Featured stops along the way include Angkor Wat, Old Hanoi, Ta Prohm and Phnom Penh.
