Conjuring the spirit of the Old West, the seventh annual Billy the Kid Trail Ride is inviting clients to take the 125-mile horseback journey from Lincoln, N.M., to Fort Sumner, N.M., to retrace outlaw Billy the Kid’s infamous 1881 escape from the Lincoln County Jail.
The trail begins in Fort Sumner on May 9 and ends in Lincoln on May 16. Along the route, historically accurate reenactments, story-telling and chuck-wagon dinners keep clients entertained. The ride also includes visits to host ranches to learn about preserving the land and landmarks.
When clients finally arrive at Lincoln, they can join local residents and visitors for an old-fashioned fandango at the Lincoln State Monument Visitor’s Center, where a Western-themed dinner will be served. Story-tellers, musicians and dancing will also liven the evening.
“This is a great way to share in the legend that is Billy the Kid,” said Michael Cerletti, secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department. “The Billy the Kid Trail Ride is an unforgettable eight days of starry skies and campfires, history and memories to last a lifetime.”
