As a Los Angeleno, I embody a few cliches: I do yoga multiple times per week, I love going to the beach and — the stereotype most notoriously lampooned the world over — I drink a lot of green smoothies.
So, naturally, when I travel to destinations far and wide, one of the first things I usually do is scour the area for a good juice bar. One of my favorite domestic finds is Jus Aspen, a small counter-serve cafe tucked away inside the Ute Building in downtown Aspen, Colo. Serving everything from cold-pressed juices and homemade milks to sandwiches, wraps and salads, Jus features an extensive menu that belies its modest store footprint.
For me, the highlight of the cafe is its smoothies. My favorite is the Kermit: a blend of banana, spinach, ceremonial matcha, almond butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, local wildflower honey and coconut milk. The Asterix is also mighty tasty, featuring banana, hazelnuts, cacao nibs, espresso, local wildflower honey and almond milk.
But no matter if you choose the Chilly Willy, the Scooby Doo or the Snagglepuss (other cheekily named smoothie options), you’re bound to be delighted by the fresh, organic boost — perhaps before you embark on one of the area's can't-miss hikes.
