As we drove down a street in downtown Los Angeles, the lack of busy traffic made me think that everyone was still at home, lounging in their pajamas (even though it was nearly noon). But as soon as I arrived at Smorgasburg, I realized my previous assumption was wrong and that everyone, in fact, was here. The outdoor food market had been open for only an hour, but many of the tables were already occupied and some lines seemed to have no end.
We decided to take a tour of the participating vendors before deciding where we would purchase our food. The many sights and smells gave me sensory overload, and I found myself wanting everything that I set my eyes on. But good things come to those who wait, and I didn't want to make a premature decision I would later regret __ though, you can't really go wrong with any of the nearly 50 vendors at Smorgasburg.
Ultimately, I ended up purchasing a half-dozen grilled, Cajun-seasoned oysters from The Jolly Oyster and a sweet fruit tea from PopdUp, a drink vendor. Both were choices that I would gladly make again in future visits (and have done so since). I also snagged a "takoyaki" bubble waffle from Yellow Business, which was stuffed with octopus and topped with a sweet sauce. I felt full, but still picked up two ensaymadas (soft and sweet Filipino bread) from Ensaymada Project __ one Oreo-flavored and one cheese __ for the road.
I left Smorgasburg with a full and satisfied stomach, as well as the need to go back again.
Smorgasburg is open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
