Beyond the Beach

Glass-blowing demonstrations are just one of many artistic adventures to be had on the Central Oregon Coast. // (c) Oregon Coast Visitors Association
Glass-blowing demonstrations are just one of many artistic adventures to be had on the Central Oregon Coast.

There’s more to the Central Oregon Coast than the beach and sea life, including excellent dining, arts and entertainment options that will enrich your clients’ next adventure.

One of the best places to savor regional cuisine is The Bay House, with legendary fine dining, a 1,600-selection wine list, an unbeatable view of the bay and affordable lunch and happy-hour menus (the latter takes place in an inviting cocktail lounge). For a hearty breakfast or lunch, clients can join the locals at Shirley’s on ‘D’ Bay Restaurant along the Newport bayfront.

Clients who want an education with their meals will enjoy the Pacific Coast Center for Culinary Arts in Lincoln City, which offers cooking classes and demonstrations led by central partner and renowned local chef Rob Pounding and guest chefs. The best part of going there is sampling the results — Chinook salmon fillets, cheesy polenta and the freshest asparagus of the season on a recent visit. Check the Web site for its schedule of classes.

When it’s time to explore the coast’s entertainment options, clients can try their luck at Chinook Winds Casino Resort. Chinook Winds offers slot machines, keno, blackjack and poker. The resort also features an 18-hole golf course, live entertainment, a children’s arcade and dining that beats typical casino fare. On-site accommodations include an oceanfront hotel and RV park.

Blown glass and other regional art can be found at many small, independent galleries in the area. Some double as studios, enabling visitors to see artists crafting their wares. Standouts include Alder House III and Mossy Creek Pottery in Lincoln City, as well as Earthworks and Touch Stone Galleries in Yachats.

For a hands-on experience, the Jennifer L. Sears Glass Art Studio offers free glassblowing demonstrations and classes in glass arts. Visitors can make their own glass floats to take home, modeled after those that have long washed up on nearby shores from Japanese vessels. The colorful creations make beautiful, lasting reminders of a Central Oregon Coast adventure to cherish.
