The Courtyard by Marriott at the Historic Fisk Building in downtown Amarillo, Texas, won the top design award for adaptive reuse of a historic building from the Texas Downtown Association (TDA). The Courtyard by Marriott at the Fisk was one of two finalists in the Best Adaptive Reuse category for projects costing more than $1.5 million.
Amarillo architect Jim Doche redesigned the building into the Courtyard by Marriott at the Fisk. The hotel was developed and is owned by Newcrest Management.
“[Amarillo] Center City nominated the Courtyard by Marriott at the Historic Fisk Hotel because it represents a great example of taking a 1927 office building and transforming it into a modern business hotel,” said Beth Duke, executive director of Center City. “The Courtyard has become a jewel in the heart of downtown.”
The Courtyard opened New Years Eve 2010 with 107 rooms and suites on 10 floors. The Fisk Building was erected in downtown Amarillo in the late 20s. The original building was designed by local architect Guy Carlander and served as a medical professional building for many years. The building is located at the corner of Polk St. and 8th Ave.
“This is great news for Amarillo’s hospitality community,” said Jerry Holt, vice president of the Amarillo Convention & Visitor Council. “We are very proud of all the effort in the $12.7 million project and send our congratulations to the management and staff of the property.”
The Presidents Awards Program of TDA has recognized more than 150 projects, events and people that make a difference in the downtown areas of Texas. The awards were announced at its state convention in Nacogdoches.
