LAS VEGAS The Maybach that picks you up from the airport is your
first hint that Skylofts is not your father’s Las Vegas experience.
The recently opened boutique hotel at the MGM Grand melds
over-the-top service with sophisticated luxury, electronic wizardry
and hip design.
Tiny by Vegas standards when complete, it will have just 51 lofts
the hotel within a hotel caters to VIPs and anyone who is willing
to splurge to be treated like one.
When you step out of the Maybach (the ultra-luxurious, and
ultra-pricey, British automobile) and into a private elevator that
whisks you directly to the 29th floor, you are thrust into a sleek
world of high design and technology, where an army of butlers
stands at attention to cater to your every need.
The one-, two- and three-bedroom two-story lofts range from 1,400
to 6,000 square feet with nightly rates of $800 to $10,000.
Ultra-modern and sleek with clean lines, many mirrors and light
colors, they boast towering 24-foot floor-to-ceiling windows that
provide panoramic vistas by day and twinkling city views by
night.
“These are contemporary urban lofts,” said David Van Kalsbeek,
MGM’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “Yet the
feeling is residential, calm and functional.”
Each loft has gadgets galore, starting with custom Bang &
Olufson and Sony AV equipment and at least five flat-screen TVs,
including some TVs that are embedded in bathroom vanity
mirrors.
User-friendly remote controls adjust everything from drapes to
temperature to a customized music and video library. Press a button
to set mood lighting; press a “do not disturb button” for privacy;
press another to request maid service. And forget the ubiquitous
Mr. Coffee an espresso maker lets you choose among four types of
beans then brews your morning cup to precisely the strength and
size you like.
Bathrooms are complete personal spas with steam room; an
eight-foot-long shower with wall jets and rainshower head, and an
infinity-edged, overflowing deep-soaking jetted tub that will light
up the water in a rainbow of colors.
Service takes pampering to new heights. There’s a butler for your
every whim a spa butler will draw your bath, fill the steam room
with lavender scents, offer a fragrant neck pillow, put on a CD of
soothing tunes and then discreetly depart. A dream butler provides
you with a choice of a dozen pillows and herbal teas.
Other butlers will teach you how to work your espresso machine,
unpack your suitcases and press your suit, serve you cantaloupe
juice or deliver your favorite liquors whatever tasks you can
conjure up, they are eager to fulfill.
It may all feel like a bit much for those not accustomed to being
waited on but it’s surprising how quickly you can adapt to the VIP
treatment.
And when it’s time to head home? The Maybach awaits.
