Kauai’s Poipu Bay Golf Course is on target to reopen on Dec. 16, unveiling its newly renovated greens.
The course has been closed since April 1 to undergo a comprehensive greens refurbishment project. The original Tifdwarf Bermuda grass has been removed, and greens have been replanted with a Sea Shore Paspalum hybrid that has proven to be an optimum putting surface in Hawaii. The eco-friendly Sea Shore Paspalum requires less fertilizer and almost no herbicides for maintenance, and it is a very drought tolerant grass.
“The new greens will provide a more consistent speed year-round,” said Poipu Bay director of golf Craig Sasada, “creating a better overall golf experience for our guests. We are very pleased with the progress of the renovation thus far, and we’re looking forward to welcoming golfers back to Poipu Bay beginning Dec. 16.”
In addition to the greens project, Poipu Bay’s 21,000-square-foot clubhouse is undergoing refurbishment, including locker room renovation, new carpeting and repainting. The restaurant at the clubhouse is closed, but Poipu Bay’s golf shop remains open daily except Sunday.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Poipu Bay opened in 1991 and gained international recognition as the home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1994-2006. The 18-hole course is situated on 210 oceanfront acres adjacent to the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa and has, over the years, been consistently ranked among the top golf courses in Hawaii and the U.S.
